Though this proposal hasn’t been well advertised by government, make no mistake if adopted it could have important implications for everyone in North Somerset. How residents in the area interact with essential local services, like waste collection, might change forever and holding those who deliver services locally to account might also be a thing of the past. It is certainly one of the largest changes that North Somerset has ever seen and in my experience nothing positive ever came from introducing further layers of bureaucracy and red tape. I personally don’t want to see decisions about local issues being made outside the area, in Gloucestershire for instance. How can people living there recognised and understand our needs and also be passionate as well as committed about addressing them? Many feel that the old Avon County Council didn’t work and was broken up because it was too large to reflect local views. Therefore how can this new proposal, potentially bringing together North Somerset, Bristol, Gloucestershire, Bath and North East Somerset, be any different.
